More on the Health Benefits of Tea. Tea is truly amazing for your health.
I’ll have some follow up articles posted soon with links to the supporting research.

I thought I’d open here with discussion on the topic of exotic tea and a brief summery of tea types.

Since tea is foreign in origin, all teas are exotic by definition, but apart from being grown outside our borders the many blends, flavorings and varied growing and processing methods produce a myriad of striking and unusual taste experiences. It is this aspect of tea and particularly of exploring and purchasing tea online that really excites me. The only thing that excites me more is the life enhancing qualities of tea (especailly White tea). Tea is just about the best substance you can put into your daily diet. Two cups a day will do your body good.

The online tea shop allows an abundance of varieties available to us and is cost effective too. Here at The Exotic Tea House, I will share with you all I know about tea. There are so many options to consider and it is simply wonderful to be able to take your time to absorb, compare and browse from the comfort of your own home. I think that is just awesome.

Let’s start with the major producers of tea

There are four major producers of tea, India, China, Sri Lanka and Japan.

 India
India is the largest tea producer in the world. It has overtaken China and produces approximately 1/3 of the world’s tea today. India’s pride is Darjeeling tea, known as “the champagne of teas”. It is grown in West Bengal’s Darjeeling region. Darjeeling is truly and exotic tea. This black tea combines hints of fruit, nut and flowers. It is considered on the of the world’s finest teas.

 China
Another exquisite tea and unique flavor is Lypsang Souchong tea. This full-bodied Black tea is from Eastern China and is smoked over embers of pine. This exotic tea is wonderful to serve when entertaining guests or to simply savor as one unwinds from the day. China is also the major producer of White Tea. White Tea is the most wholesome of teas and has the most health benefits. Be sure not to miss the section on White Tea.

Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon)
Ceylon tea is a sweeter more delicate Black Tea. It has a hint of honey like taste to it, which is perfect for the morning such as French Breakfast Tea. Also high in the mountains at an altitude of 2200-2500 meters above sea level in the Nuwara Eliga region. Sri Lanka grows the finest White Tea. This exotic tea is lighter and milder than the rest with a hint of honey and pine.

 Japan
Japan is also a major producer of Tea, but they export only 2% of what they grow. Japan is best known for it’s Green Teas

Types of tea

Black, White, Green and Oolong all come from the Camellia Sinesis plant. Camellia Sinesis is an evergreen shrub and is commonly known as the tea tree. The difference between these teas is, the leaves are plucked at various stages of development and are then processed using assorted methods.

Black tea leaves are fully matured and then fermented. Black Tea has a more robust flavor and the most caffeine of the teas. Caffeine builds up as the leaves mature.

Green Tea has about half the caffeine of black tea. Green Tea is processed by drying and pan frying the leaves as opposed to fermenting. This slows the oxidation process and allows Green Tea to retain more nutrients.

White Tea leaves are plucked very young before they are completely opened. These infant leaves are still covered with fine silvery hairs, thus the name White Tea. After plucking they are immediately steamed and dried often right in the field. This process makes White Tea the most wholesome of the teas, it contains the highest levels of anti-oxidants and polyphenols and 1/3 the caffeine of Black Tea.

Oolong tea is partially fermented and falls in between Green and Black Tea.

Chai Tea is Black Tea which is strongly spiced and diluted with milk. There are also many flavored teas or “flowered teas”. Tea is flavored by adding herbs or flowers in with the tea leaves. This produces a vast array of intriguing gourmet tea blends. These combinations are practically limitless with an abundance of exquisite taste experiences.

In the sidebar you will find a link to a large selection and various varieties of the teas I’ve mentioned. Order some today and indulge yourself in this inexpensive luxury. Tea is truly a pleasure you won’t want to miss and two cups a day will improve your health.

Treat yourself to an exotic tea. It is an affordable extravagance.

Sencha
Filed under: exotic tea and gourmet tea

From the shadow of Japan’s Mount Fuji this amazing green tea is health and delicious.

As a civilization on of Japans greatest accomplishments is their remarkable green teas. This Sencha Tea competes well with any of its rivals from China and surpasses many. The literal translation of Sencha is “common tea”, but there is nothing common or ordinary about this exquisite needle leaf tea.

I am not normally a green tea fan, for most are too grassy for me. This tea has a distinct vegetal flavor that is wonderfully robust and both sweet and bitter. The complexities of these flavors are balanced and create quite a unique taste treat. The aroma of steaming vegetables rises upon infusion reminding me of summer squash and arugula. The appearance of its attractive liquor is clear, pale green and very inviting. There are three characteristics that define a great tea, exceptional taste, fragrant aroma and appealing liquor. This Sencha has all three.

Morocca Mint Tea

This exotic tea consist of Chinese Gunpowder tea (high quality Green Tea hand rolled into small pellets) and the flavors of Spearmint and Peppermint.

We can consider Moroccan Mint Tea as an exotic tea but in Morocco it is the most common beverage. It is so popular there that Morocco is the #1 imported of Chinese Green Tea. If you visit Morocco and are offered some, please don’t refuse it for that would be a big insult to your host. Moroccan Mint Tea is considered the drink of hospitality.

Whether you want an iced tea to cool you during the heat of the day, or a hot tea to warm and sooth you during the cool of the evening, Moroccan Mint Tea is a wonderful choice.

Traditionally in Morocco this tea is prepared with great pride by the head of the family. It is poured into small glasses from a distance of 2 -3 feet in order to produce a rich foam in the tea. Moroccans prefer it very sweet and an additional sprig of fresh mint is considered essential. I personally don’t care for my tea sweet, but I do love this tea because the menthol effect of the mint on the Green Tea eliminates the grassy aftertaste and leaves my mouth feeling refreshed.

Jasmine Tea

Enjoy this very floral Green Tea and experience why it is China’s favorite and most consumed exotic tea. Jasmine is harvested in the afternoon and stored until evening when its fragrance is at its fullest. Then and only then the Jasmine petals are mated with the fine Green Tea of Fujian Provence.

The petals and the leaves are layered together and the tea leaves absorb the fragrance and the flavor of Jasmine. Great fans then gently whisk the petals away leaving this exotic tea, smooth, elegant and with its own unique character.

I particularly like this tea with spicy foods. There is a contrast between its rich floral elements and the zest of spices that I find delightful. Jasmine Tea may be enjoyed hot or iced. Its flavor is wonderful and the Green Tea is wonderful for you.

Darjeeling Black Tea

Darjeeling Black Tea is considered the champagne of teas. Light in color and thin-bodied this gourmet tea has a muscatel flavor and a slightly astringent after taste. There are seasonal differences to note.

  • Springtime tea has a light green liquor it is brisk and mildly astringent.
  • Summer tea has a fuller flavor, becoming muscatel and with a fruity note.
  • Monsoon tea is bolder and stronger yet. It is rarely exported and considerably cheaper.
  • The autumnal tea is full-bodied and less spicy.

In order for a tea to bare the name Darjeeling it most come from one of 85 plantations in the Darjeeling region of West Bengal, India. Considering there is four time as much Darjeeling tea sold each year than there is grown in this region. It is important to look for the Darjeeling certification mark and logo.

Unlike the rest of the tea grown in India, Darjeeling Tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant. These plants were imported into the area in 1848 by Robert Fortune, who frequently visited China. Fortune viewed the Camellia Sinensis tea of China as superior to India’s Camellia Assamica teas. Camellia Sinensis leaves are smaller than the leaves of the Camellia Assamica plant. In the Darjeeling region they employ a processing method which is unique to that area. They start with what is known as a hard wither. This technique does not allow the leaves to completely oxidize and ferment like other Black teas. So technically speaking Darjeeling Black Tea is actually a form of Oolong Tea. Many Darjeeling Teas are blends and the range of oxidation varies from nearly Green Tea through Oolong to Black Tea.

Once all the tea from Darjeeling Tea Plantations was produced into Black Tea. With the rising popularity of Green, Oolong and White Tea, some of these estates are now producing them as well. These varieties are becoming more common and easier to find on the world market.

White Licorice Tea
Filed under: exotic tea and gourmet tea

I can’t say enough about White Licorice Tea, I just love it this exotic tea. Iced it is the most refreshing and thirst quenching beverage I’ve ever had. And hot it is extremely soothing. The licorice flavor adds to the warming effects of this gourmet tea.

The two elements of White Licorice Tea are one, white tea and two, star anise or licorice root extract.

White Tea has many health benefits for us. It contains a  ton of anti-oxidants, 15 times that of fruits and vegetables (see entries on White Tea and health benefits of tea) The flavor of white tea is light, sweet and sometimes has a smoky note to it. White Tea is ideal for flavoring and licorice is my absolute favorite.

Star Anise provides a mild licorice flavor to this exotic tea. It is the perfect complement to it. Star Anise also aids digestion and contains Shikimic Acid which is the active ingredient of Tamiflu’s swine flu vaccine.

Licorice Root provides a stronger licorice flavor. Licorice also has a variety of health benefits of its own. It is a mild expectorant that helps break down mucus. Licorice reduces acid secretions in the stomach, which is why it is used to treat peptic ulcers. Licorice also stimulate the adrenal glands which helps us cope with stress, reduces fatigue, depression, irritability and muscle weakness.

The White Licorice Tea we provide is flavored with Star Anise. If you want your gourmet tea flavored with Licorice Root, I suggest our high quality White Tea and Licorice Root from the vendor link below.

The pleasure of the Orient

The combination of White Tea’s Yin Zhen buds and Ginger Root produces a delicate aromatic exotic tea with zest. White tea and Ginger is a wonderful combination and this tea is often called “The Pleasure of the Orient”.

Enjoy all the health benefits of white tea (see entries on White Tea and Health Benefits of Tea) along with the added benefits of Ginger Root. The Chinese have been using Ginger to treat nausea, diarrhea and upset stomach for over 2000 years. Many western medical practitioners also recommend Ginger for nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, pregnancy and motion sickness.

Drinking White Ginger Tea is a truly invigorating experience. It will enliven your spirit as it soothes and warms your body.

Flavored or Flowered Tea
Filed under: exotic tea and gourmet tea

There is a vast array of flowered tea combinations for us to explore and enjoy. Discovering these different taste experience is one of the reasons that gourmet tea drinking is so fun.

We have been mixing flowers and herbs together with leaves of the Camellia Sinensis (tea) plant for centuries, adding new dimensions to our favorite exotic tea. These combinations have produced some of the most popular and widely consumed teas in the world. Earl Gray tea has become so well known and familiar that it is hardly even considered a flavored tea any longer. Earl Gray is a fine Black Tea which is flavored with “Oil of Bergamot” and has a distinct orange taste to it.

Another example is Chai Tea. Chai Tea is Green Tea which is heavily spiced with Cardamom, Cloves, Cinnamon and Spice Oil. Chai originated in India where this heavily spiced tea is diluted with milk or up in the Himalayas with yak butter.

All 4 tea types are flowered in various ways for each type supports flavoring in differently. A common flavoring practice for Black Tea is to pair a fruit and spice together. It is said that any fruit/ spice combination that works well with food also pairs well for tea. A popular example is honey and pear. Flowers are also used to flavor Black Teas. Rose Tea is familiar to us and Jasmine is very well liked too.

Flavorings stand out more with Green Tea. Usually it is flavored with a single fruit or floral element. Jasmine or Mint being the most well known and popular. Moroccan Mint Tea is a wonderful exotic tea experience. It is considered “the drink of hospitality”. This Green Tea is spiced with Peppermint or Spearmint or both. Traditional highly sweetened and served hot or iced. I personally drink it differently, I like the Green Tea / Mint combination because the Mint really neutralized the grassy taste common to Green Tea. This combination allows me to enjoy the health benefits of Green Tea without the overwhelming grassy after taste.

White Tea is ideal for flavoring. The taste of White Tea is mild, sweet with a smoky hint to it. My wife loves White Tea with Melon flavoring. White Ginger Tea has a wonderful zest to it. My all time favorite iced tea is White Licorice Tea. White Licorice Tea is flavored with Star Anise. Star Anise gives it a mild licorice flavor and this produces an iced tea that is the most thirst quenching drink I have ever had. It is refreshing and invigorating.

Oolong Teas have complex flavor that is naturally fruity. Oolong can support stronger fruit flavors such as Pomegranate or Peach. For a wonderful fruit/ nut combination try Oolong with almonds. Oolong with orchids produces a very exotic tea. And sugar/caramel should not be missed.

I continue to urge everyone to incorporate a White or Green Tea into their daily diet. The health benefits are just too important not to. Exploring the different tea tastes makes it fun. The varieties of flavored tea are practically endless and trying them is a pleasure you won’t want to miss.

Health Benefits of White Tea & Green Tea

The most wholesome tea is White Tea. Its leaves are plucked very young, before they have completely opened. As a matter of fact the most cherished White Tea consists of unopened buds. It is called Bai Hao Yin Zhen or Silver Needle, which is descriptive of the unopened buds. One of two other varieties is White Pony, it includes the bud and one infant leaf. The second is Longevity Eyebrow which has two leaves along with the bud.

White tea as all true teas (White, Black, Green and Oolong) comes from the Camellia Sinensis (tea) plant. Green tea leaves are more developed or adult leaves and Black Tea leaves are fully matured. White tea is more wholesome for two reasons. One it contains anti-oxidants which are extremely healthy for us. Secondly oxidation of the White tea leaves is immediately halted by steaming them often right in the field. This simple but immediate processing allows the anti-oxidants to remain intact. The other teas also contain anti-oxidants, but their methods of process differ and the amount of anti-oxidants diminishes with the processing. Green tea is pan fried and then dried. Black tea is allowed to ferment and Oolong tea is partially fermented. Green Tea retains a significant amount of anti-oxidants, much more than Black Tea, but latest research declares that White Tea outperforms Green Tea 2:1. The caffeine level is also lowest in White Tea.

Anti-oxidants do many wonderful things in our body. They help to eliminate free-radicals from our cells. Free-radicals do damage to our cell walls and alter our DNA. These alterations are what trigger the mechanism that causes many forms of cancer to begin. Anti-oxidants fight cancer on two other levels as well. Apoptosis is the natural process that cells go through in order to die off and make room for new cells. Cancer cells do not follow this natural process. Anti-oxidants target cancer cells and stimulate Apoptosis in them without accelerating it in health cells. Another characteristic of cancer cells is that they rapidly reproduce and produce tumors. Research shows that tea consumption slows and in some cases even reverses tumor growth and cancer reproduction.

You would think that alone would be enough of a reason for everyone to include White Tea into their daily regimen.

White tea and Green Tea also include many more heath benefits. Tea also stimulates the body to increase the production of interferon. Interferon is a powerful anti-viral. It also improves the functioning of the liver and reduces liver inflammation. This is wonderful news for people with liver and viral issues. Tea consumption also improves the cardio vascular system by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while enhancing the performance of arteries.

Other health benefits associated with tea drinking include…

  • Reduces blood sugar
  • Antiviral
  • Anti Fungal
  • Anti Bacterial, Reduces the growth of staphylococcus and streptococcus, pneumonia and dental caries
  • Treats boils, stomach ulcers sore throats
  • Increases elasticity and decreases breakdown of skin cells

So what are you waiting for? Two cups of White tea (or a little more Green Tea) only costs a few cents a day there are some wonderful varieties to choose from. In the sidebar there is a link to a quality tea vendor. While this is all fresh in your mind, you should order some now.
